Update for the semester

Hello all,

I want to apologize for such a late update. Last semester was very busy and we did not keep this up to date! So I'm here to do a recap on the semester and the events held.

On the second week of school in August, we hosted a Welcome Back Breakfast in our building. We provided coffee, orange juice, cookies, and mini muffins. We encouraged everyone to bring in their mugs for a discount on the coffee. Kayla, one of our event chairs, made the muffins and they were a hit! Thanks, Kayla. We hope to do this again for the spring semester and continue with it for next year!

In September, as mentioned below we did our community service and participated in Greensboro Beautiful! We had more interest than volunteers, unfortunately. The sun wasn't really out but we made the best we could. Fortunately, it wasn't too cold and it didn't rain. We cleaned up for about two hours and then headed over to the trash drop-off point at the World War Memorial Stadium. After the drop-off we were provided pizza and drinks for everyone who volunteered throughout Greensboro that day!

Unfortunately, we did not have anything for October. We did want to have some kind of Fall Festival but had trouble coordinating anything within time. So, October was a respite.

In November, we hosted our first department wide Thanksgiving Potluck and Canned Food Drive. Three years ago, the first years decided to have a Thanksgiving meal in studio before the break. Our instructor Tommy Lambeth approved it. This happened again the following year and became a tradition. IIDA thought it would be a wonderful way to include the whole department because it had brought that year closer together. Why not try to do that with the whole department? So with the third years blessing we did. However, due to studio times (half were in the morning and the other half in the afternoon), we divided the years into categories to cover the potluck. We asked the first years to bring drinks, second years to bring desserts, third years to bring the main courses/meats and sides, fourth year to bring sides, fifth years and graduate students to bring cups and utensils. We made it work and it was quite a success!!! The cans we collected were donated to the Greensboro Urban Ministry. We were able to donate about 180 lbs of canned food. Thanks to my whole steering committee for helping set it up and take it down! Also a thanks to all the years for their time and help!

In December, we held our first Holiday fundraiser. Our event chairs, Kayla McDonagh and Clairissa Anderson, worked on ornaments to create for our fundraiser. We sold two types of ornaments, a tree and a snowlake, were flat but could be put together to create a 3-D ornament. The ornaments were a hit!! We also hope to do this for next year.

That about wraps up the Fall semester. During this spring semester, we have a few fundraisers in mind. Our first will be a Welcome Back Breakfast for a few days next week. We also plan to meet to start coordinating for Beaux Arts, our end of the year celebration, where we hope to invite professionals in the design to attend. In February, we plan to provide candy grams in the spirit of Valentine's Day. An entertaining fundraiser during March Madness. Then end in April with our Beaux Arts Ball!

Community Outreach: Greensboro Beautiful

On September 17, 2011, our Campus Center participated in Greensboro Beautiful, a subgroup of NC Big Sweep. We had a good amount of people interested in this activity. Unfortunately, the turn out wasn't as plentiful but we did have a good group of people. Our designated area was on S. Mendenhall Street from Spring Garden Road to Courtland Street.

I, like others there, was surprised at some of the items we came across during our pickup. It was also sad to say that the trash we picked up most of were cigarette buds. It is unfortunate that people continue to smoke knowing the risks but the sad part is they don't seem to care about cleaning up after themselves (at least being more considerate with where to throw them out). On an upside, we have a couple of people thank us for cleaning up their street. It is always nice to be supported!!

Although, it is no longer the beginning, we are still in the early part of the semester. Our previous president, Katie Reynolds, has graduated. Based on the downward slope that the campus center has taken in the last couple of years, we are hoping to reestablish it to its Golden Era. Although, there is still a lot of work to do, I would like to introduce the current members of the Campus Center steering committe.

This month's program, Design Days, is geared toward students, professional members and guests alike. There will be a special "Textile Basics" presentation and tour of the Momentum warehouse to be followed by a portfolio and resume review for students. Then a CEU program entitled "Etiquette for Business Effectiveness" for everyone to attend. The objectives of this course are to demonstrate how to make a good impression through effective introductions, how to fluently answer difficult questions from potential clients, how to perform as an effective host in client situations, and how to handle uncomfortable situations gracefully. The Student Task Force is comprised of no more than six IIDA Student Members who will serve as a resource for IIDA Headquarters. Students will be expected to commit one hour a month to the Student Task Force.

Students last year gave feedback on possible webinar ideas, Campus Centers, NeoCon Student Day events and even assisted with the execution of NeoCon Student Day 2009.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to IARC from IIDA! There is a lot going on this year in the IARC program and we are trying to reach out to the IARC community and get you guys involved and have some non-studio fun! We are planning some exciting events to make this school year the best ever in the IARC program. Bellow are some of the things we already have scheduled, but there is way more yet to be announced. Join us next Wednesday, September 2nd at noon in the crit space on the fourth floor for snacks and our first IIDA meeting of the year. We are trying to get new members to join, so whether you are a 1st year or a 4th year, come and have a brownie, and listen to all the fun to be had with IIDA.

Current Happenings:

-FOOD FRIDAYS!!- Starting this Friday, August 27th in the lobby, we will have hot, delicious pizza for lunch. $1 per slice, so come hungry! This is a perfect time to come and socialize with the rest of your IARC family and network with students not in your studio. Come out and have some fun!

- DONATIONS NEEDED!!!- There will be a box on the 3rd floor next to the elevators where we will be taking donations for My Sister's House starting August 31. Baby supplies, baby clothes, feminine supplies, and house supplies (i.e. lightbulbs, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) If you would like to make a monetary donation, you may do so by giving it to an IIDA board member.

-VOLUNTEERS!!- Robert is looking for willing workers to assist him on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am-5pm at the Urban Studio. Painters, cleaners, and all around willing helpers can just show up to help whenever possible. If you need directions to the site, ask someone in IIDA.

-BIG SWEEP- September 19th from 9am-12pm we will be assisting with the big sweep. Location and time to be announced later. We would love volunteers!

-HAPPY HOUR TOUR- IIDA is arranging for Happy Hour Mixers around Greensboro. We would love to spend some time outside of studio to give everyone a chance to relax and get to know each other. The first Happy Hour is set for Friday September 4th; location and time to be announced later.

-IIDA meeting- Wednesday September 2nd at noon we will hold our first IIDA meeting of the year. Please come out and hear about all the fun you can have with us throughout this upcoming year, and snag a snack or two. See you all next Wednesday!!

as another fundraiser for the BEAUX ARTS BALL... second year student jayson parker is going to be giving SALSA LESSONS once a week until beaux arts. the dates for the sessions will be every tuesday from 7-8:30 in the critique room on the 4th floor. the dates are as follows:

it will be $10 a session or if you want to go to all 8 sessions- you get a package deal of $60. the session will include light refreshments + an hour and a half of professional dance lessons!

the CAROLINA CHAPTER of IIDA is hosting a logo design competition to only UNCG interior architecture students to develop a new logo for their chapter's website. the logo will be used to develop a brand for the chapter on their website + printed material. below are the guidelines + details of the competition but please notice the following:

-the deadline is FEB. 16th by 5:00 in the digital drop box- a panel of i.arc faculty will judge the submissions and pick the best ones to be sent to IIDA carolina chapter-- we will mail the winning submissions to cara phillips-- DO NOT SEND THEM DIRECTLY TO HER
-a $200 reward for the winner as well as public recognition on their website and email blasts-- great resume + portfolio builder!
-you MUST use the international IIDA logo which is placed in the digital drop box under the IIDA folder as an .eps file.

Room: $50 a night per person -- if you stay 4 students to a room [$150 total]
Board: Bring at least $100 to contribute to fuel + meals during the trip + museums + shopping

Meeting Wrap up 26.September.2008

In case you missed it here is the round up of our last meeting on friday 26. September

At the meeting we discussed the fall break trip to charleston which includes a visit to the architectural/interior architectural firm LS3P. The rooms for the hotel have been booked and the rates locked in so sign up now.

Also discussed was the tshirt design contest. Final designs for the iArc tshirt are due on the 10th of October. Submitted designs will be voted on.

The All night Charette, iArc are working with the Salvation Army and Consumer and Retail Studies on a redesign of the Salvation Army shops in the Greensboro area. Therefore on the 24th of October, iArc will host an all night charette from 7PM- 7 AM. The plan is for hourly charettes to come up with ideas for the design. So join us at 7 for what is sure to be an exciting night of design!

It's time to vote in the new fresh faces of the 2008-2009 IIDA board. These people are the movers and shakers of IIDA and help with everything from IARc functions and IARc community events to networking and working with professionals in North Carolina.

Habitat for Humanity

I know this is a little short notice, and I have already talked to some, but this Saturday we are going to be shingling with Habitat for Humanity from 8am to 3pm. As it is almost time to elect new offices so the roles of the different offices and how the process will be set up for all members to vote will be addressed. Adopt-A-Stream

The Iarc department has adopted a stream, and we need your help cleaning it!
We will meet in the Gatewood lobby at 3pm on Monday March 17th.
And walk to the stream in Peabody park (on campus).

We will be discussing in greater detail the progress of the t-shirt sales, trip to Richmond and volunteer work as well as the long a waited Beaux Arts Ball of 2008. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the upcoming Triad’s IIDA & AIA event. The topic of this program is Building Code’s featuring guest speaker, William Whaley. This event will be held at Volvo Trucks’ Communication Center the evening of Tuesday, February 19th from 6-8.
In addition to offering quality education and awareness of N.C. State Building Codes, you may choose to self-report for CEU credits along with exploring great networking opportunities. Please plan to attend. RSVP’s are still being accepted. Please see your studio rep or comment on the blog if you are interested so we can see about lessening the car polling impact to the parking lot. RSVP by 12 FEB@ 6pm.
